It supports the Farnborough Alzheimer Caf\u00e9, the first in the UK, which started 2000 &#8211; and helps other Alzheimer Caf\u00e9s to set up nationally and internationally. We use the dementia-education and support this \u2018caf\u00e9 model\u2019 started in 1997, by the Dutch, clinical psychologist Dr. B\u00e8re Miesen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em><strong>The Alzheimer Caf\u00e9 is especially for people with dementia and their family and friend carers. \u201cCome out of the woodwork \u2013 you are part of society and we want you to take your part in it.&nbsp; Dementia is a part of life for some, for which nothing yet can be done.&nbsp; You didn\u2019t ask to get it: it could happen to anybody.&nbsp; Don\u2019t hide away.\u201d&nbsp; Dr. B\u00e8re Miesen<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contact information<\/strong><br>Email:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:alzheimercafe@hotmail.co.uk\">AlzheimerCafe@hotmail.co.uk<\/a><br>Website:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimercafe.co.uk\/\">www.AlzheimerCafe.co.uk<\/a><br>Address: St. Peter\u2019s Parish Centre, 60 Church Ave,<br>Farnborough, Hants, UK, GU14 7AP<br>Telephone: 07938 175 002&nbsp;(voicemail)<br><br><strong>Trustees<br><\/strong>Dr. Gemma Jones (co-founder and Chair)<br>Hilary Dyce (coordinator of Farnborough AC)<br>Dr. Olive Fairbairn<br>Josh Cudworth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is an Alzheimer Caf\u00e9 (AC)?<\/strong><br>An AC is more than just a \u2018social outing\u2019, which the name, taken&nbsp;<em>literally<\/em>, suggests.<br>It&#8217;s a <strong>monthly two-hour, gathering, <\/strong>held in a friendly, caf\u00e9-like setting for the purpose of dementia-education, socializing, and support.&nbsp; It is for people who have (any type of) dementia, their family and friends, and anyone interested in dementia.&nbsp; Refreshments are provided, and the AC is <strong>free of charge<\/strong>.&nbsp; Just like a normal caf\u00e9, there\u2019s <strong>no need to register in advance<\/strong>: you can come and go as you please.&nbsp;&nbsp; It is organized by trustees, a steering committee, and hosted by a Coordinator; volunteers and professionals help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why use the name \u201cAlzheimer\u201d Caf\u00e9 if people with every type of dementia attend?<\/strong><br>Dr. Miesen used the name <em>Alzheimer Caf\u00e9<\/em>, (as opposed to <em>Dementia Caf\u00e9)<\/em>, because when the AC started, the national support organizations had names like \u2018<em>Alzheimer Societies\u2019.&nbsp; <\/em>He wanted to link the ACs to that name because Alzheimer\u2019s Disease was, and still is, the most known and frequently occurring type of dementia. (Since then, to be totally inclusive, most \u2018Alzheimer Societies\u2019 have made an addition to their name, such as <em>\u201cand other types of dementia and neurological disorders\u201d <\/em>).&nbsp; This inclusion is implied for the ACs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The AC aims<\/strong> to reduce fear of dementia and stigma by providing:<br><strong>\u2219<\/strong> a place to meet and socialize with others \u2018in the same boat\u2019<strong><br>\u2219 <\/strong>education about dementia \u2013 especially the emotional aspects<br><strong>\u2219 <\/strong>support for people with dementia and family carers<br><strong>\u2219 <\/strong>information about local services at a \u2018Literature Table\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who attends?<br>\u2219<\/strong> people who have dementia*, their family, partners, carers, caregivers, friends,<br>&nbsp; neighbours (children and grandchildren too , if they can enjoy a talk)<br><strong>\u2219 \u2018<\/strong>Core family members\u2019 \u2013 who have attended the caf\u00e9 for several years and help<br>    newcomers feel at ease<strong><br>\u2219 <\/strong>any interested others \u2013 health and social care students and professionals,<strong><br>&nbsp; <\/strong>secondary school students who are thinking of healthcare-related studies, people<br>&nbsp; from other support and retail services, members of the public<br><strong>*<em>The AC is for people with dementia who are aware of their diagnosis, and who are accompanied to the AC by someone known to them.&nbsp;It is hoped that people will start to attend the AC as soon as possible after their diagnosis.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How many AC sessions can people attend?<br><\/strong>There is no set limit.&nbsp; People can attend the sessions for as long as they feel safe being there, and comfortable during the presentations.&nbsp; Some guests have attended for many years; some have become volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens during a two-hour AC?<br><\/strong>At each AC session, timings are approximately:<br>&#8211; half hour of socializing, music, refreshments<br>&#8211; half hour of presentation\/discussion* about some aspect of dementia<br>&#8211; an hour for more socializing, music, refreshments, informal discussion about<br>&nbsp; the theme, time to ask questions, and visit the Information Table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* The presentation is in the form of a talk, interview, or video related to dementia \u2013 especially the emotional aspects of having it &#8211; or caring for a person who has dementia.&nbsp;<br>The presentations progress through a set of themes, which broadly follow the course of a dementing illness. &nbsp;They are presented and discussed openly and sensitively.&nbsp; AC guests can participate and ask questions of the presenters.<br>(click <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/alzheimercafe.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/AC-Farnborough-2022-23-PR-print-version.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a>to see the  \u201cFarnborough AC\u201d  pamphlet which shows the dates and usual themes.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>What have people said about the AC<br><br>&#8211; \u201cThis is magic.
